Почув про книгу після перегляду фільму。 Цікаво порівняти акценти режисера фільму і самого автора。Мухаммад ульд Слахі багато пише як пережити психічні тортури， як релігія допомагає триматись глузду і надіятись на краще есхатолоічне майбутнє。 Як автор він чудово передає атмосферу перебування в тюрмі， катування， відносини з охоронцями， ставлення працівників в’язниці до роботи і до нього особисто。Також цікаво як автор описував оправдання себе， те як він старався в хорошому світлі показати арабів。 Ск Почув про книгу після перегляду фільму。 Цікаво порівняти акценти режисера фільму і самого автора。Мухаммад ульд Слахі багато пише як пережити психічні тортури， як релігія допомагає триматись глузду і надіятись на краще есхатолоічне майбутнє。 Як автор він чудово передає атмосферу перебування в тюрмі， катування， відносини з охоронцями， ставлення працівників в’язниці до роботи і до нього особисто。Також цікаво як автор описував оправдання себе， те як він старався в хорошому світлі показати арабів。 Складається враження що ці рукописи це не так як біографічні записи， як рефлексія на життя в тюрмі де тебе принижують через етнічну приналежність。 Власне подібні рефлексії і буди найцінннішими для мене。 Бо все инше просто або факти або описи жахливого катування во ім’я демократії。Загалом рекомендую до прочитання。 Ну і хочеться побачити украінський переклад книги） 。。。more

لى ولع خاص بقراءة كتب ادب السجون نعم لا أزعم انى قرأت منها القدر الكبير لكن لها موقع اثير فى نفسي و تترك بى أثرا يبقى و بصمة لا تزول يوميات غوانتنامو هو أحد هذه الكتب حيث يدون صاحبه يوميات سجنه و هو رهين الحبس فى سابقة مثيرة و غير مألوفةيسرد الكاتب رحلته من موريتانيا ثم الاردن مرورا بباغرام ثم انتهاء بالجحيم غوانتنامو عذابات متواصلة و الآلام تنقطع و سرد متميز و ترجمة حاذقة لم يعوق كل ذلك الجهد الا ما كميته الإدارة الأمريكية لمن اطلاع الجماهير عليه و على الرغم من أن سردية الكتاب الأساسية هو القهر لى ولع خاص بقراءة كتب ادب السجون نعم لا أزعم انى قرأت منها القدر الكبير لكن لها موقع اثير فى نفسي و تترك بى أثرا يبقى و بصمة لا تزول يوميات غوانتنامو هو أحد هذه الكتب حيث يدون صاحبه يوميات سجنه و هو رهين الحبس فى سابقة مثيرة و غير مألوفةيسرد الكاتب رحلته من موريتانيا ثم الاردن مرورا بباغرام ثم انتهاء بالجحيم غوانتنامو عذابات متواصلة و الآلام تنقطع و سرد متميز و ترجمة حاذقة لم يعوق كل ذلك الجهد الا ما كميته الإدارة الأمريكية لمن اطلاع الجماهير عليه و على الرغم من أن سردية الكتاب الأساسية هو القهر و للتعذيب لكن تخللته اشياء أثارت فى نفسى الكثير من التأمل مثل ولع السجين بمعرفة الوقت رغم عدم جدواه （ أو هكذا يبدو الأمر ） و كذلك استعمال الكاتب لمحفوظه من القرآن لتحديد الوقت حيث أنه إذا قرأ العدد الفلانى مو الصفحات يكون مصى ما يوازيه من وقت و هو ما قد استعمله الفقهاء قديما فى تاقيت بعض الأمور الفقهيةكذلك علاقة السجين و السجان و هى علاقة شديدة التعقيد عصية على الفهم لكن لم يجربها حيث اجتمع فيها التناقضات من مشاعر الكره و الالفة و المقت و الارتياح فى مزيج غريب قد لا يلاحظه السجين فى أول أمره لكنه يارب إليه بخفة و يبدنسمب برشاقة فى روحه ولا يتفطن إليه إلا عندما تحين لحظة الفراق و تنقطع حبال الوصل أما لتبدل السجان أو لمغادرة السجين عندئذ يجد السجين فى نفسه خفقان عجيبا و يشعر بشيء يسلب من لا يدرى متى تسلل اليهختاما لا يمكن إلا أن نشيد بذكاء الكاتب و صلابة إرادته حيث تعلم الانجليزية رابع لغاته ليس فى الغرف الأنيقة من فتيات عذبة اللهجة جذابة المظهر لكن من حراس غلاظ شداد فى الأقبية القذرة و مع ذلك لم يتقنها فحسب بل يتكئ بأسلوب ادبى متفنن يشى بأديب كامن كان تحين الفرصة حتى يكشف عن نفسه 。。。more

All I can say is WOW。 I decided to read this book after watching the movie The Mauritanian based on Mohamedou Ould Slahi’s captivity in Guantanamo Bay after being falsely accused of conspiring 9/11。 Since this is essentially his diary during his time in captivity， it is so eye opening to the interrogation and torture that is done to prisoners and broke my heart reading this information knowing this is what our country partakes in and does。 I give this a 5 star not because the writing was amazing All I can say is WOW。 I decided to read this book after watching the movie The Mauritanian based on Mohamedou Ould Slahi’s captivity in Guantanamo Bay after being falsely accused of conspiring 9/11。 Since this is essentially his diary during his time in captivity， it is so eye opening to the interrogation and torture that is done to prisoners and broke my heart reading this information knowing this is what our country partakes in and does。 I give this a 5 star not because the writing was amazing （English being Slahi’s 4th language） but rather the emotion that was put into writing it and the truth behind it all despite the government’s redaction of a large amount of the information in the book。 。。。more

Ah， the heartwarming tale of a young man who just wants to go home and how the U。S。 government provides him with free shelter， food， water （lots and lots of water） and medical care。 Oh and free clothing！ Who can forget that stylish orange jumpsuit and black hood？In all seriousness， this is an enraging and heartbreaking read/listen revealing the darkness at the heart of America--which I knew it would be going in and so have put it off all these years。 But with the movie out，* I decided it was tim Ah， the heartwarming tale of a young man who just wants to go home and how the U。S。 government provides him with free shelter， food， water （lots and lots of water） and medical care。 Oh and free clothing！ Who can forget that stylish orange jumpsuit and black hood？In all seriousness， this is an enraging and heartbreaking read/listen revealing the darkness at the heart of America--which I knew it would be going in and so have put it off all these years。 But with the movie out，* I decided it was time。 Slahi is a compelling and credible writer， which is what makes this work all the more enraging and heartbreaking。 Oh and why the fuck is Donald Rumsfeld not in prison？ We hanged people at Nuremberg for many of the same war crimes that this man （and yes， George W。 as he was the ultimate "Decider"） committed。 I mean， yes， I know why。。。 But， still。。。*Which， fuck you to BBC Films， Amazon Prime， and/or whoever else thinks I'm going to pay $20 to rent a film to watch on my 22-inch television。 。。。more

I saw this movie poster （The Mauritanian） and I got to know that it's based on true events。 Starring one of my most favourite actor Tahar Rahim。I wanted to read the book first。 So here I am after devouring it nonstop with all those omissions in the text。Muhammadou Oulad Salahi born in Mauritania and got his scholarship for Germany in Electronic Engineering。 He spent almost 12 years in Germany。 He did only one thing bad， which was fighting in Afghanistan against Communists。 Ironically people who I saw this movie poster （The Mauritanian） and I got to know that it's based on true events。 Starring one of my most favourite actor Tahar Rahim。I wanted to read the book first。 So here I am after devouring it nonstop with all those omissions in the text。Muhammadou Oulad Salahi born in Mauritania and got his scholarship for Germany in Electronic Engineering。 He spent almost 12 years in Germany。 He did only one thing bad， which was fighting in Afghanistan against Communists。 Ironically people who kidnapped or detained him， were on his back on that time。This was dark spot which got him arrested for more than three times and everytime he turned him in。Guantanomo Bay detention centre had been in headlights of human rights violations and other war crimes。 I had been hearing and reading this since in was 13 years old。 Salahi bore tremendous torture but he wasn't chargeded in all those years。Mauritanian govt stabbed him in the back to turn him over without sufficient proof。 It's not new thing for third world countries to bait these so called demi God like America with their own people。 Our Pakistani dictator Musharaf offered many individuals like Salahi。The book is very beautifully written but redactions tried to make it very difficult to read。 However footnotes from editor helped to understand redacted texts。 After all that torture， Salahi didn't have any grudge against Americans and even those guards who did him。 He had been critical of USA policies。 However Salahi finally won his battle of release but this book was published in 2005。 。。。more

Once again， I finish a book I can't rate with Goodreads stars。。。This is quite literally the pencil-scrawled， partly redacted （later recreated）， diary of a GTMO detainee who was held without charges （of course） and subjected to horrifying， literally jaw-dropping torture methods （but no waterboarding， if the info for the upcoming film has you wondering） for 15 years。 It was written in English， which the author learned just from listening to prison staff speak to each other （it's his fourth languag Once again， I finish a book I can't rate with Goodreads stars。。。This is quite literally the pencil-scrawled， partly redacted （later recreated）， diary of a GTMO detainee who was held without charges （of course） and subjected to horrifying， literally jaw-dropping torture methods （but no waterboarding， if the info for the upcoming film has you wondering） for 15 years。 It was written in English， which the author learned just from listening to prison staff speak to each other （it's his fourth language）。 This makes the writing really stilted and full of weird colloquialisms。 There is also not enough of his personal Mauritanian backstory to really help the reader to see him as a fully developed "character。" BUT。。。this is an important book and I'm glad it exists， and I'm also glad there is a film version coming out （even though I bet that will be full of inaccuracies because Hollywood）。 This story needs to be in the world。 。。。more

Excellent movie about a young man who appreciates his family & community。 His family and community encourage his academic endeavors after having been successful in his early school years。 Despite his kind hearted optimism he faces a terrible situation and despite his horrific challenges he with othersrally together in a beautiful over coming story。 This is now a movie with Jodie Foster expected towin more Oscars for her role as an attorney for the main character。My husband and I saw the movie an Excellent movie about a young man who appreciates his family & community。 His family and community encourage his academic endeavors after having been successful in his early school years。 Despite his kind hearted optimism he faces a terrible situation and despite his horrific challenges he with othersrally together in a beautiful over coming story。 This is now a movie with Jodie Foster expected towin more Oscars for her role as an attorney for the main character。My husband and I saw the movie and recommend both the book and movie。 。。。more
